My story began with cleaning swimming pools and repairing motors and piping for pool equipment. When I talked to plumbers, they would tell me, “If you are doing all that, you should be a plumber!” One of those plumbers offered me a job, and I accepted. This lasted 6 years. The shop was run on a union model with apprenticeship training. I was a great student, mastering plumbing, customer service, sales and administration, but I was severely underpaid. When I ventured in the open market to see my worth, lo and behold, I was offered 2 times what I was making. At this point my brother convinced me to get a contractor’s license which I did along with my journeyman’s license. Then, my employer offered to match my job offer by my prospective employer, but it was too late. And here I am, 18 years later with 12 trucks and a growing business.
